[11:41]<@Calum> Good morning/afternoon/evening all
[12:10]<@jacky> Calum: Hello
[12:10]<@jacky> :)
[12:10]<@Calum> hey jacky, how goes it?
[12:10]<@jacky> hanging in. :)
[12:10]<@jacky> you?
[12:10]<@Calum> heh, about the same
[12:10]<@jacky> I forget where we left off....
[12:10]<@jacky> you got a new job, maybe?
[12:11]<@Calum> yeah, I started it a few weeks ago, just about settled in now
[12:11]<@Calum> but - I also have a probable new job offer
[12:11]<@jacky> lucky you!
[12:11]<@jacky> hehehe
[12:11]<@jacky> I forgot what the current one is... what are youdoing?
[12:12]<@Calum> heh, well, it's like buses...none come along forever, then two at once
[12:12]<@jacky> and what's the newer one?
[12:12]<@jacky> "when it rains, it pours"
[12:12]<@Calum> I'm officially a "branch administrator" - I do some filing, some admin work, and support the contract managers by dealing with subcontractors and chasing paperwork for work we do, or have done, for clients
[12:13]<@jacky> that rings a bell
[12:13]<@jacky> construction?
[12:13]<@Calum> the new job is an IT helpdesk role, with a company in the same "group" as my current place
[12:13]<@Calum> yeah, construction and maintenance
[12:13]<@jacky> helpdesk... whew.. Be sure to have plenty of anti-acids handy
[12:13]<@Calum> mainly maintenance contracts for things like HVAC, access control, and general maintenance like filling potholes in their car parks and stuff
[12:14]<@Calum> Oh, I know...been there, done that, but it's at least something I have more experience and interest with
[12:14]<@Calum> not that I don't enjoy what I'm doing, and it sure is convenient, not far away at all
[12:14]<@jacky> we live in a world anymore... that when a customer calls (not just for IT help, but any kind of business), I get the feeling that they are trained to get you off the phone, not to actually fix anything
[12:15]<@jacky> all it causes is hard feelings
[12:15]<@Calum> depends on the company, but yeah, I know exactly what you mean
[12:15]<@Calum> at the end of the day it depends what "stat" they value most, as to what they train you to do
[12:15]<@jacky> ever hear people over here complain about Comcast or Verizon? (major cable tv company = Comcast. major phone co = Verizon)
[12:15]<@Calum> at Overclockers, we got scored for a while on phone response - number of calls, average time to answer, average time on the phone, and how many RMAs we raised
[12:16]<@Calum> Yeah
[12:16]<@jacky> about "stat". yes! exactly. instead of caring about doing good work.
[12:16]<@jacky> ah well
[12:16]<@jacky> I wish you good luck with it
[12:16]<@jacky> :)
[12:16]<@Calum> arguably, they could score on how many faults fixed, or something. The helpdesk where I am now, they are judged on actual user feedback
[12:16]<@Calum> thanks
[12:17]<@jacky> what else is new? anything?
[12:17]<@Calum> I have a second interview there tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes. As for what's new, well, had a slightly eventful weekend, had to go rescue my mum when she broke down lol
[12:17]<@jacky> car?
[12:17]<@Calum> Silly lady sat in the car with the radio on, drained the battery
[12:17]<@Calum> hah, yeah, car not mental breakdown!
[12:18]<@jacky> ahhh... that's just jumper cables, and start it up and let it charge itself
[12:18]<@jacky> nothing to it
[12:18]<@jacky> but... for the radio to kill a car battery, is not normal.
[12:18]<@jacky> that should take a looooooong time
[12:18]<@Calum> indeed, however I misplaced my jump leads, so had to rely on her having some which thankfully she did
[12:18]<@jacky> a radio doesn't use much juice
[12:18]<@Calum> yeah, I figure the battery was on its way out anyway, talking it over the next day we remembered something the seller said
[12:18]<@Calum> I picked up a new battery the next day, so all sorted now
[12:19]<@jacky> car seller or battery seller?
[12:19]<@jacky> what'd they say?
[12:19]<@jacky> if the battery was getting old... 5 years or so... you did the right thing
[12:19]<@Calum> sorry, the car seller - they did say it wouldn't start on the day we went to view it, but it had been stood a while. He said if it struggled the next day he'd fit a new battery
[12:19]<@Calum> Guessing he probably didn't, hence needing a new one...no biggie, like you say they don't last forever anyway
[12:19]<@jacky> I wouldn't have bought it
[12:19]<@jacky> hehehe
[12:20]<@jacky> until he put in a brand new battery
[12:20]<@Calum> I grabbed a new battery in November for mine
[12:20]<@jacky> they can be expensive
[12:20]<@Calum> hm, well, it was cheap enough and has no other issues (touch wood) so we did get a good deal
[12:20]<@jacky> and ... sigh.... over here anymore, they want to make you jump through hoops, just to throw away the old one
[12:20]<@Calum> I know a fair bit about the specific model she bought so I was pretty confident
[12:20]<@jacky> what kind of car is it?
[12:20]<@Calum> here, too, unless you take it to a scrap metal place and they pay you a little for it :)
[12:21]<@Calum> It's a Rover 45 - identical to my car, though mine has a slightly bigger engine, different badge & styling
[12:21]<@jacky> the scrap metal place here, is like 30 miles away. compute the cost of gas... your time... heheeheheh
[12:21]<@jacky> badge ?
[12:21]<@Calum> true. Here it's on her way to work, so easy enough
[12:21]<@jacky> that's ok then
[12:21]<@Calum> Yeah, hers is badged a Rover, mine an MG - same company
[12:22]<@jacky> does badge mean the brand name?
[12:22]<@Calum> MG made "sporty" looking versions of Rovers
[12:22]<@Calum> yes
[12:22]<@jacky> ah
[12:22]<@jacky> is that like what I see here, Range Rover ?
[12:22]<@jacky> usually a 4wd?
[12:22]<@Calum> Land Rover, who make Range Rover, used to be under the same parent company as Rover, but not for a long time
[12:22]<@jacky> that's it... Land Rover. forgot
[12:22]<@Calum> not since before MG/Rover went bust in 2005/6
[12:23]<@jacky> so you have Land rover AND just plain Rover ?
[12:23]<@Calum> yep
[12:23]<@jacky> that's got to cause some confusion at times
[12:23]<@jacky> heh
[12:23]<@Calum> and to confuse matters further, the Rover 45 was also a Honda Civic, and the engine was used in quite a few different brands too
[12:23]<@jacky> but honda is a japanese car, not English
[12:23]<@Calum> yep
[12:24]<@jacky> I'm confused
[12:24]<@jacky> heeh
[12:24]<@jacky> I thought Rover was an English car
[12:24]<@Calum> Honda and Rover collaborated for a while, they built a few different cars together which were almost identical
[12:24]<@jacky> ah
[12:24]<@jacky> what kind of motor is in yours an dhers?
[12:24]<@jacky> jap or English?
[12:24]<@Calum> some 80's Rovers are Honda engined for example, and some 00's Hondas are Rover engined
[12:24]<@Calum> English
[12:24]<@Calum> with Jap suspension
[12:24]<@jacky> which one is best?
[12:25]<@Calum> depends who you ask...the older Honda engines were very reliable, the English engines were mostly reliable but with a few caveats like any engine
[12:25]<@Calum> they did get a very bad rep though, for blowing head gaskets, purely down to poor maintenance by owners
[12:25]<@jacky> my friends son... I was talking to his crowd yesterday... a few of them love Hondas.... this one young man has a Honda Civic that is about 20 years old, and absolutely LOVES it.
[12:25]<@Calum> that's pretty much what finished Rover
[12:26]<@jacky> so... if they are out of business now... where do you get parts, etc?
[12:26]<@jacky> and didn't that kill the value of yours?
[12:26]<@Calum> there's still a good amount of spares around, genuine ones too, plus aftermarket parts
[12:26]<@jacky> cool
[12:27]<@Calum> at the age of my car, it didn't really matter, but Rover values on the whole are quite low anyway which makes them pretty good value
[12:27]<@jacky> like Pontiac here I guess
[12:27]<@jacky> what year is yours?
[12:27]<@Calum> 2001
[12:27]<@jacky> that's fairly new.... it'll last you a while
[12:27]<@jacky> :)
[12:27]<@Calum> should do, yeah
[12:28]<@jacky> gas is going up over here... sigh
[12:28]<@Calum> here, too...what's yours at nowadays?
[12:28]<@jacky> $3.62 per gallon, yesterday
[12:28]<@jacky> I don't know what that is, in pounds
[12:28]<@jacky> or liters
[12:28]<@Calum> quite a jump, if I remember it was quite a bit lower last time we spoke about it
[12:29]<@jacky> !g .es 1 pound in USD =
[12:29]<@jacky> it might be broken...
[12:29]<@jacky> I think it is
[12:29]<@jacky> it went up about 20 cents there all in a few days, and pissed everybody off
[12:29]<@Calum> wow
[12:29]<@jacky> they say it will climb more... but slower.... to summer then level off
[12:29]<@jacky> but
[12:29]<@jacky> who really knows?
[12:30]<@jacky> how much is it over there?
[12:30]<@Calum> it jumped from around £1.30 to £1.35/litre in the last 10 days or so
[12:30]<@jacky> let me go use google... brb
[12:32]<@jacky> holy sh*t!!! if I did that right, that is $8.03 per gallon
[12:32]<@Calum> sounds right
[12:32]<@jacky> that's absolutely nuts
[12:32]<@jacky> somebody is getting fat....
[12:32]<@Calum> tell me about it
[12:33]<@jacky> well... speaking of burning gas... I need to go to the store for a few things.
[12:33]<@jacky> sigh
[12:33]<@jacky> and it is all drippy out
[12:33]<@jacky> was raining
[12:33]<@jacky> but "warmed up" to 50 or so
[12:33]<@Calum> think we'll have more snow tonight, it's freezing today though
[12:33]<@Calum> probably be ice everywhere in the morning
[12:33]<@jacky> which is a HECK of a lot better than when it was 20something a couple weeks ago
[12:33]<@Calum> heh
[12:34]<@jacky> I'm hoping/wishing/thinking that the worst is behind us, here
[12:34]<@jacky> that it will slooooowly improve, bit by bit - now
[12:34]<@Calum> fingers crossed for you, then
[12:34]<@Calum> oh, one question for you, if you have a minute
[12:34]<@jacky> if it just doesn't do that big wind with temps in the 20s or 30s... that's a big improvement
[12:34]<@Calum> yeah
[12:34]<@jacky> sure.. I'm not in a super hurry to get there
[12:35]<@Calum> I almost bought a project car the other day...to learn more about mechanics, and bodywork, etc, planning on taking a welding course in a few months actually. Main question is, if a car has been stood for a while, what would you think would be necessary to change first off?
[12:36]<@jacky> to get the motor running?
[12:36]<@Calum> I was thinking tyres might be perished, obviously oil & filters would need changing...clean up any electrical connectors, that kind of thing
[12:36]<@Calum> yeah
[12:36]<@jacky> re: motor: pull the dipstick. not only to check oil level, but look at the oil on the stick closely
[12:36]<@jacky> is it white-ish?
[12:36]<@jacky> not good
[12:36]<@jacky> smell it
[12:36]<@jacky> smell right?
[12:37]<@jacky> if you really want to do it right, simply change the oil before you even try to start it
[12:37]<@Calum> what would white-ish oil indicate? Oil in the coolant?
[12:37]<@jacky> pull the plugs. are they all gooked up?
[12:37]<@Calum> er, other way around
[12:37]<@jacky> white-ish (if I recall correctly) is water in the oil. Yes... coolant
[12:38]<@jacky> if the plugs are gooky... maybe motor was using oil.
[12:38]<@jacky> if nice and browinish/ grayish... good
[12:38]<@jacky> if the car has stoof for a long time, dump the old gas out
[12:38]<@Calum> I was about to ask, would you also drop the fuel
[12:38]<@jacky> modern gas isn't worth a damn, after about 30 days
[12:38]<@jacky> at least over here
[12:38]<@Calum> fair enough
[12:38]<@jacky> use fresh gas
[12:39]<@jacky> if the car has fuel injection
[12:39]<@jacky> in the new gas, put a bottle of injector cleaner
[12:39]<@jacky> try to fire it up! see what happens
[12:40]<@jacky> re: tires: visual inspection... dry rot, cracks, etc? that could be a safety concern
[12:40]<@Calum> cool, I've been following the same train of thought re: the engine at least
[12:40]<@Calum> brakes...likely to be fubar?
[12:40]<@jacky> if it doesn't start, pull a plug and then put that plug wire back on it, and use something insulated to ground the plug agaisnt metal
[12:41]<@jacky> and get somebody to spin it over... see if you can see "fire" a spark
[12:41]<@jacky> should be bright
[12:41]<@Calum> ok
[12:41]<@jacky> not wimpy yellow
[12:41]<@jacky> brakes: how long has it sat?
[12:41]<@jacky> indoors or out?
[12:41]<@jacky> disk on the front and drum on the back?
[12:42]<@Calum> well, I'm letting this one go, as my uncle backed out of storing it for me heh. But, say it's stood outside a few years, disk brakes
[12:42]<@jacky> the brakes might be stuck... yes
[12:42]<@jacky> take it out of gear and get some friends and push it... see if you can roll it and/or break them loose
[12:42]<@jacky> you might have to replace the pads
[12:43]<@jacky> we've actually pulled cars, with a nylon rope, to break the brakes loose
[12:43]<@jacky> :)
[12:43]<@Calum> disks & pads don't tend to be all that pricy, so I guess that wouldn't be a huge issue. Calipers, though, would need removing and stripping down, do you think?
[12:43]<@jacky> sometimes pulling backwards works, when forwards doesn't
[12:43]<@Calum> hm, that's handy
[12:44]<@jacky> I'm not a real mechanic... but I doubt the caliper would need much... there isn't much there, if I recall
[12:44]<@Calum> fair enough, heard stories about seizing calipers, though that might not be an issue on all cars
[12:44]<@jacky> the part that acts like a cylinder... is it a piston?... some of that migh tneed rebuilding
[12:44]<@jacky> then it becomes a quesion:
[12:44]<@jacky> cheaper to buy replacement, or rebuild?
[12:44]<@jacky> it can suprise you
[12:44]<@Calum> true
[12:44]<@jacky> as for welding class... that is interesting
[12:44]<@jacky> lots to that
[12:45]<@jacky> I can't weld
[12:45]<@jacky> my friends son can
[12:45]<@Calum> mhm, I've been reading quite a lot on it, and it's something that interests me
[12:45]<@jacky> and my friend is good with a torch
[12:45]<@jacky> there is old fashioned stick welding
[12:45]<@jacky> that's arc welding
[12:45]<@Calum> I think what I'm looking at, is MIG welding
[12:45]<@Calum> I've read it's easiest, for beginners
[12:45]<@jacky> then there is MIG welding. that's when one uses a gun with wire fed through it, and some sort of Argon mix gas
[12:45]<@jacky> no slag
[12:45]<@jacky> makes a nice weld
[12:46]<@jacky> I think it is easiest, yes
[12:46]<@Calum> cool
[12:46]<@jacky> then there is TIG welding
[12:46]<@jacky> I think it uses something to make an arc, and the welder uses a feed rod to do the welding, held in the other hand
[12:46]<@jacky> and again, it done in some sort of gas cloud
[12:46]<@Calum> yeah, I've heard it's more difficult to do, as you don't have both hands to control the welder
[12:46]<@jacky> with TIG, if one learns it, one can weld aluminum
[12:47]<@jacky> I hear that is tricky to learn
[12:47]<@Calum> but, like you say, you can weld more metals than with MIG
[12:47]<@jacky> keep any of it out of your face
[12:47]<@jacky> I think breathing that sh*t is a killer
[12:47]<@Calum> yep, that's what I've heard too
[12:47]<@jacky> and learn to use a GOOD mask.
[12:47]<@Calum> needs to be somewhere well ventilated, with a decent mask
[12:47]<@jacky> ever heard of "flash" ?
[12:48]<@Calum> mhm, been reading about that today - not pleasant
[12:48]<@jacky> a friend (used to weld a LOT) got flash once
[12:48]<@jacky> it happened ot him hours later
[12:48]<@jacky> the best he could describe it,... it felt like there was sand under his eyelids
[12:48]<@jacky> awful!!
[12:48]<@Calum> I saw it described earlier as "someone jabbing your eyes with a hot pin all night long"
[12:48]<@Calum> it's basically a sunburned cornea, right?
[12:49]<@jacky> to be honest, I forget
[12:49]<@jacky> bu tthat sounds reasonable
[12:49]<@jacky> I do recall that it doesn't happen immediately
[12:49]<@Calum> I think it's something along those lines, due to the welding creating lots of UV light
[12:49]<@jacky> and about sunburn... you can sunburn yourself! I've seen it. somebody does a lot of welding, and anything that is not covered will be tanned and show up
[12:50]<@jacky> as for body work... I've only played with it. it is an art
[12:50]<@jacky> and the techonology changes
[12:50]<@jacky> they have neat stuff now-a-days
[12:50]<@jacky> but the trick is in getting things smooth and uniform
[12:50]<@Calum> I don't intend to get too in depth with the bodywork...I mainly want to learn a bit of welding, and mainly just attacking rust, that's the main thing
[12:51]<@Calum> rust is the expensive part, if you take it to a shop
[12:51]<@jacky> because after you paint it... if you paint it a high gloss paint, especially black, EVERYTHING shows up
[12:51]<@jacky> my friends recently assembled a little truck
[12:51]<@Calum> so I figure if I can at least tackle some, that should help, and even if it's not painted, or not painted well, it's better than the rust eating away
[12:51]<@jacky> from two or three
[12:51]<@jacky> to sell it
[12:51]<@jacky> I think it is a toyota or something... doesn't matter
[12:51]<@jacky> guess what?
[12:51]<+camerongray> Oh hey Calum & jacky
[12:51]<@jacky> they painted it with what we call rattle cans !
[12:52]<@Calum> ah right
[12:52]<@Calum> hey cameron
[12:52]<@jacky> but! they used a satin paint... not much shine to it
[12:52]<@jacky> and it looks pretty darn good!
[12:52]<@jacky> was cheap to do
[12:52]<@jacky> camerongray: Hello
[12:52]<@jacky> try some rattle cans. know what I mean?
[12:53]<@jacky> tape off the sections, and do a new pattern. hehehehe
[12:53]<@Calum> yeah, I suppose as long as I do a decent bit of prep, it can't make it any worse
[12:53]<@Calum> can always strip it back and try again
[12:53]<+camerongray> lol, I know nothing about cars :P
[12:53]<@jacky> we have one friend... he had a small honda car... he could tape it up, and paint it ... I forget how many cans it took .... in less than 4 hours!
[12:53]<@Calum> nice
[12:53]<@jacky> he'd paint that car a half dozen times a year!
[12:53]<@jacky> heheheh
[12:53]<@Calum> haha
[12:54]<@jacky> he didn't strip it... just roughed it up and painted over it
[12:54]<@jacky> hehad it purple one time... whew
[12:54]<@Calum> my friend had a purple Honda, once
[12:54]<@Calum> that was factory, though
[12:54]<@jacky> yeesh
[12:54]<@Calum> looked pretty nice actually
[12:54] * Kevin (Mibbit@mib-DEA9649.dhcp.aldl.mi.charter.com) has joined #glitchpc
[12:54]<@jacky> oh... they have something that is new to me, too
[12:54]<@jacky> not paint
[12:55]<@Calum> oh, plastidip?
[12:55]<@jacky> but some sort of rubber coating
[12:55]<@jacky> that's it!
[12:55]<@jacky> you can put it on... and peel it off months later
[12:55]<@jacky> right?
[12:55]<@Calum> seen that used quite a lot over here for various things, a friend of mine used it to good effect on some trim
[12:55]<@Calum> yep, that's right
[12:55]<@jacky> expensive though, right?
[12:55]<@jacky> you don't just up and do the whole car.....
[12:55]<@Calum> it can be, but when you factor in not having to do any prep, it's not too bad
[12:56]<@jacky> point
[12:56]<@Calum> it's not *really* meant for doing the whole car in, though of course you can
[12:56]<@jacky> so... if you master welding....
[12:56]<@jacky> are you going to make a custom computer case... say, out of 1/4 thick steel?
[12:56]<@jacky> the "MONDO" case?
[12:56]<@jacky> indestrutable
[12:56]<@jacky> (sp)
[12:56]<@jacky> heheheheeh
[12:56]<@Calum> you know...you won't believe this...but making computer cases hadn't even occurred to me...
[12:56]<@jacky> har
[12:56]<@Calum> I would make an epic case
[12:57]<@Calum> you have me thinking now...hehe
[12:57]<@jacky> it would weigh about 80 pounds!
[12:57]<@Calum> theft-proof
[12:57]<@Calum> it's a feature
[12:57]<@jacky> you could use it as legs for the dinner table
[12:57]<@jacky> hehehe
[12:57]<@Calum> or a step, to reach the ceiling
[12:57]<@Calum> multi purpose
[12:57]<@jacky> theft proof "feature" ... sigh... you should be a used car salesman...
[12:57]<@jacky> hehehe
[12:58]<@Calum> hehe, thought you might appreciate that one
[12:58]<@jacky> hey.. if you do it right, the case could be the heat sink
[12:58]<@Calum> that's actually pretty damn hard to do, but it is a neat concept
[12:58]<@Calum> been done a few times, but expensively
[12:58]<@jacky> do custom computers! weld 'em shut! they have to come back to you, for upgrades!!
[12:58]<@jacky> heheheeh
[12:58]<@Calum> hahaha
[12:59]<@jacky> what? the case as heat sink? somebody really tried/did that?
[12:59]<@Calum> don't tell Apple...they'll start that next week and sue you for coming up with the idea
[12:59]<@Calum> yep
[12:59]<@Calum> brb, I'll get a link
[12:59]<@jacky> wow
[12:59]<@Calum> http://www.quietpc.com/hfx-classic-case
[12:59]<@jacky> apple? screw 'em. you weld the new case in the shape of a tangerine then
[12:59]<@jacky> hehehe
[12:59]<@Calum> haha
[13:00]<@jacky> neat pics
[13:00]<@jacky> I wonder how they conduct the heat away from where it is, to the sides though?
[13:00]<@Calum> I'm sure Zalman made one, too, but I can't find it
[13:00]<@jacky> know what I mean?
[13:00]<@Calum> they use heatpipes
[13:00]<@Calum> http://www.quietpc.com/images/products/hfx-classic-internal-fully-installed.jpg
[13:01]<@jacky> is that some heatpipes, to the bottom left?
[13:01]<@Calum> yeah, the silver ones are going to the case
[13:01]<@Calum> the copper coloured ones are on the board and not part of the case
[13:01]<@jacky> yeah.. well... I think the idea here is to sell cases, more than to actually do a good job
[13:02] * Serpent (Archer_Ser@DD4C7372.6664D8A.A2551A04.IP) Quit (Input/output error)
[13:02]<@jacky> to do it right, the components would need to be mounted to the sides of the case
[13:02]<@jacky> in other words, total new hardware design
[13:02]<@Calum> definitely, but it's a very nice looking case :) doing it "properly" as in, for proper cooling performance...would be extremely difficult
[13:02]<@jacky> yep
[13:03]<@Calum> like you say, not really possible following current standards, it'd have to be a proprietary case with its own custom board, etc
[13:03]<@jacky> and you'd need to know a welder
[13:03]<@jacky> heh
[13:03]<@Calum> heh
[13:03]<@jacky> we do "heavy" duty cases, y'see
[13:07]<@jacky>
[13:07]<@jacky> heheh
[13:07]<@jacky> ok.. anything else for today?
[13:07]<@jacky> if not... I'm heading out..
[13:07]<@Calum> don't think so, thanks for the advice
[13:07]<@jacky> as always, great to talk to you
[13:07]<@jacky> dont' be a stranger!
[13:07]<@Calum> you too
[13:07]<@Calum> I'll try!
[13:07]<@jacky> beware of free advice
[13:07]<@jacky> hehehe
[13:07]<@Calum> haha
[13:07]<@jacky>
[13:07]<@jacky>
[13:08]<@jacky> bye for now...
[13:08]<@jacky>

[13:08]<@Calum> how's it going, cameron?
[13:14]<+camerongray> Great thanks!
[13:14]<+camerongray> You?
[13:14]<@Calum> Pretty good thanks
[13:14]<+camerongray> Just building a website for someone, never seen someone so happy and thankful :D
[13:15]<@Calum> Hah, well, nice to have someone be thankful for a change
[13:15]<+camerongray> lol, yeah
[13:15]<+camerongray> So busy with stuff too though
[13:16]<@Calum> yeah, I know the feeling, always end up with no free time

[13:17]<+camerongray> That's after getting home from a full day of uni/work :P
[13:17]<@Calum> ah man
[13:18]<+camerongray> Plus I'm the king of procrastination
[13:18]<+camerongray> I had an essay to do over the weekend, ended up installing Arch linux
[13:18]<@Calum> haha
[13:18]<@Calum> well, they're kind of the same
[13:19]<+camerongray> heheeh

[13:19]<+camerongray> I hate writing :P
[13:19]<@Calum> I was the same, when I was at college, hence why I didn't go to uni
[13:20]<+camerongray> Ahh
[13:20]<+camerongray> Not too much writing at least, just for Cognitive Science
[13:21]<+camerongray> With the very scary lecturer, really tall, broad shoulders, looks like some sort of mafia guy
[13:21]<+camerongray> And spends the whole time talking about brains :P
[13:21]<@Calum> haha, crazy
[13:21]<+camerongray> This is how fun that essay was: http://www.inf.ed.ac.uk/teaching/courses/inf1-cg/assignments/assignment1.html
[13:22]<@Calum> is that even written in English? lol
[13:22]<@Calum> I wouldn't even know where to begin
[13:23]<+camerongray> lol
[13:24]<@Calum> wow, just applied for my first ever credit card
[13:25]<+camerongray> Nice! I'd be dangerous with one
[13:25]<@Calum> I'm going to have to be really careful...I've really curbed my spending since moving out, though
[13:26]<+camerongray> For example, started 2012 with a ThinkPad L512, March - Got MacBook Pro, October - ThinkPad x201, December - ThinkPad x220
[13:26]<+camerongray> Yeah, I have the benefit of staying at hime
[13:26]<+camerongray> Don't want a student loan
[13:26]<@Calum> yeah, student loan is a lot to have hanging over you
[13:27]<+camerongray> Yeah
[13:28]<+camerongray> Some people at uni are ridiculous, "Oh, I'll buy the most expensive thing since I'm a student"
[13:28]<@Calum> I've hardly used my laptop since I bought it, not really sure why I have it heh
[13:29]<+camerongray> Like my friend who blew £2500 on a laptop
[13:29]<@Calum> wow
[13:29]<+camerongray> Oh, But it's "retina"
[13:29]<+camerongray> And since you can't upgrade the RAM, why not just go for 16gb
[13:29]<+camerongray> Only £150 more!
[13:29]<@Calum> !!!
[13:29]<+camerongray> Yep! All on a loan
[13:29]<@Calum> jeez
[13:30]<+camerongray> And I honestly prefer my £400 refurb ThinkPad
[13:30]<@Calum> not surprised
[13:30]<@Calum> I had a tough choice between a Thinkpad and Elitebook, Thinkpad was out of stock so I had the HP
[13:30]<+camerongray> Ahh, nice!
[13:30]<@Calum> much less than £400 and obviously not as good specs-wise, but very impressed nevertheless
[13:30]<@Calum> only issue is trying to stop myself upgrading it hah
[13:31]<+camerongray> This is the same guy who sat drinking prosecco all night!
[13:31]<+camerongray> Ahh, yeah
[13:31]<+camerongray> What model did you get?
[13:31]<@Calum> I want the 1440x900 screen and extended 24hr battery...but I have no reason to
[13:31]<@Calum> 6930p
[13:31]<@Calum> aluminium body
[13:32]<@Calum> web page said no HDD or DVD, turned up with a DVDRW and I stuck a spare SSD in there anyway
[13:32]<@Calum> I think it was £95, or thereabouts
[13:32]<@Calum> battery still lasts 3.5 hours, too
[13:32]<+camerongray> That;'s an insane deal!
[13:33]<@Calum> I know right
[13:33]<+camerongray> And it has a trackpoint :D
[13:33]<@Calum> I can't remember the Thinkpad they had, but similar age and specs, just used DDR3 instead of DDR2 RAM - which is the only downside to mine
[13:33]<+camerongray> Ahh
[13:33]<@Calum> If I'd been really lucky, it might've come with ATI graphics too, it was basically pot luck
[13:34]<@Calum> but I guess the battery lasts longer with the Intel, and it's not like I'll be using it for gaming
[13:34]<+camerongray> Ahh
[13:34]<+camerongray> I got the 9-cell battery for mine
[13:34]<+camerongray> ThinkPad x220
[13:34]<+camerongray> i5 2520,
[13:34]<+camerongray> 2520m*
[13:34]<+camerongray> 8gb DDR3 (Came with 2gb but I upgraded)
[13:34]<@Calum> from a company called SCH trade - worth a look, sometimes the deals are awesome, sometimes rubbish. It's all off-lease stuff basically so they get them in huge batches of the same model.
[13:34]<+camerongray> And put in a 120gb SSD
[13:34]<@Calum> nice!
[13:35]<@Calum> can't argue with that for £400
[13:35]<+camerongray> Yeah, insanely good refurb - Had two laptops from the guy, they look completely brand new
[13:36]<+camerongray> Will keep an eye on SCH trade, need new computers for the youth club I do IT for
[13:36]<+camerongray> Guess what we are currently running!
[13:36]<@Calum> that's cool. My HP came with a sticker and some residue, both wiped right off - other than that, pristine. Was expecting the aluminium to scratch easily but apparently it's scratch resistant
[13:36]<@Calum> That was "B grade" too, by the way - their C grade stuff isn't really worth having
[13:36]<@Calum> what are you on at the minute?
[13:36]<+camerongray> hehehe...
[13:36]<+camerongray> I'll start from out "High End"
[13:37]<+camerongray> 2x Pentium 4 2.4GHz HP D530
[13:37]<+camerongray> Both about to die, front has fallen off one
[13:38]<+camerongray> Then a Dell Optiplex 170l Celeron
[13:38]<+camerongray> Then the beautiful 800MHz Pentium 3 with 96mb rAM
[13:38]<@Calum> oh dear
[13:38]<+camerongray> Yeah
[13:38]<+camerongray> Council is all "Oh, you are in a good area, you don't need new PCs"
[13:38]<@Calum> well, that makes perfect sense
[13:39]<+camerongray> I ended up giving them an old PC - P4 2.6, shoving 2gb RAM in and using all the others as thin clients
[13:39]<@Calum> fair enough
[13:39]<+camerongray> It can cope pretty well but obviously video is a no-go
[13:39]<+camerongray> Only 100mbit network
[13:40]<@Calum> not good
[13:40]<+camerongray> They only just got a grant to upgrade from a PS2 and Original XBOX
[13:41]<+camerongray> People from the council do visit every so often, they usually look quite shocked when they see the PCs
[13:41]<@Calum> not surprised
[13:42]<+camerongray> Hoping to be able to get some nice Optiplexes, 745s or something
[13:42]<+camerongray> THey have a bunch of them in the labs at uni, work really well
[13:42]<@Calum> yeah, would be a nice upgrade
[13:42]<+camerongray> Tjeu aren't used for much, basically Facebook machines :P
[13:42]<@Calum> lol
[13:44]<+camerongray> Even a bunch of properly working P4s would be fine
[13:44]<@Calum> yeah
[13:47]<+camerongray> Oh yeah, what are you up to nowadays?
[13:50]<@Calum> working as an admin guy at the minute, but I have a second interview for a helpdesk job tomorrow, see which I like better
[13:50]<+camerongray> ncie!
[13:51]<+camerongray> ncei*
[13:51]<+camerongray> damn! You know what I mean
[13:51]<@Calum> lol
[13:51]<@Calum> yeah, this job's pretty cool, literally 5-10 minutes away from my flat
[13:52]<+camerongray> Awesome! I'm pretty far from everything :P
[13:52]<@Calum> heh, I always have been, so it's nice to be close. The helpdesk job is pretty far though
[13:52]<+camerongray> ahh
[13:53]<@Calum> not too bad on the train though, avoids all the traffic
[13:55]<@Calum> oh, on a different topic, I bought another mechanical keyboard, as a spare, and some metal keycaps for my Qpad :)
[14:00]<+camerongray> Nice!
[14:00]<+camerongray> What did you get>
[14:01]<@Calum> Cherry G80, for £14 delivered
[14:01]<+camerongray> SWEET!
[14:01]<+camerongray> My majestouch is still going strong
[14:01]<@Calum> I know right :) apparently it has some custom paint job but I was too impatient to wait for pics...sure it won't be too horrific heh
[14:02]<+camerongray> heheeh
[14:02]<@Calum> waiting on a few more keycaps to turn up for my Qpad and I'll take pics, the ones I have look sweet
[14:02]<@Calum> I want an Esc key to match though, to finish it off...I've just had the WASD keys and arrow keys
[14:06]<+camerongray> Ahh, I just have the standard keys on mine, getting a bit polished but they work fine
[14:07]<@Calum> Don't get me wrong, I like the standard ones...but ocUK got these metal ones in and, well, I saw shiny things and bought immediately lol
[14:08]<+camerongray> hehehe
[14:09]<+camerongray> They do look pretty nice
[14:09]<@Calum> My other ones arrive tomorrow, can't wait to get them on
[14:11]<+camerongray> Oh yeah, have you moved to Windows 8 yet>
[14:11]<@Calum> Nope, no plans to either
[14:11]<@Calum> you?
[14:11]<+camerongray> I used it for a bit and found it okay but tried recently and hated it :P
[14:11]<+camerongray> Using Mac OS noew
[14:11]<+camerongray>
[14:11]<+camerongray> now*
[14:11]<@Calum> heh
[14:11]<@Calum> I tried to get used to it but didn't enjoy it at all
[14:11]<+camerongray> It's okay though, on my desktop and ThinkPad
[14:12]<@Calum> I'll have to get used to it eventually, so I'll bung it on a spare drive at some point
[14:12]<+camerongray> I mean, what sort of idiot buys Apple's hardware, looks at macbook :P
[14:12]<+camerongray> yeah
[14:12]<@Calum> lol
[14:12]<+camerongray> I really need to sell it but then& ebay...
[14:13]<@Calum> Yeah, I'd imagine Macbooks are one of the worst things to sell on ebay, next to phones
[14:13]<+camerongray> Yeah, My Galaxy Nexus sold okay actually
[14:13]<+camerongray> Within 3 hours of going live
[14:13]<@Calum> Nice
[14:13]<@Calum> I just see a lot of people having issues with dodgy buyers
[14:13]<+camerongray> Then the bumper case for my nexus 4, got it, didn't like it so put it up for the cost price (People are charging huge markups since it's out of stock everywhere)
[14:14]<+camerongray> Sold within 3 mins!
[14:14]<@Calum> heh
[14:14]<+camerongray> I'm always super carefuk
[14:14]<+camerongray> careful*
[14:14]<@Calum> I contemplated buying a Nexus 4 and taking it to CEX to make some quick cash, but I felt bad so I didn't
[14:14]<+camerongray> hehehe
[14:14]<@Calum> Yeah, I'm a lot more careful selling now than I used to be
[14:15]<@Calum> lots of pictures, document the serial and any other identifiers
[14:15]<+camerongray> I take tonnes of photos up-close photos with an SLR, all serial numbers/IMEI noted
[14:15]<@Calum> that's the way
[14:16]<@Calum> I haven't sold a phone on ebay for ages, probably will sell my Desire Z on there when the time comes though
[14:16]<+camerongray> Part of me wants to sell the macbook but I do find it useful
[14:16]<@Calum> yeah
[14:16]<+camerongray> Mainly to fix hackintoshes when they break!
[14:16]<@Calum> heh
[14:29]<+camerongray> Gah, need to learn where my mouth is, just poured a load of Oasis down my neck!
[14:29]<@Calum> well done lol
[14:30]<+camerongray> lol
[14:34]<@Calum> I'm off for tonight, need to get the place presentable before she who must be obeyed returns, lol. Catch you later :)
